    Detailed Listing Information
    Description of Facilities
Dr. Jeffrey S. Cohen is a Board Certified Specialist in Veterinary Internal Medicine.
The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital provides General Veterinary care to Newport Beach and the surrounding communities, as well as Referral and Second Opinion Evaluations of difficult and complex pet illnesses, primarily for Dogs and Cats throughout the Southern California area.
The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital facility was designed as a personalized veterinary practice with advanced expertise, and cutting edge technology. This veterinary hospital is completely contained with it's own radiology, anesthesiology, surgery, cardiology, ultrasound, endoscopy, laparoscopy, and diagnostic laboratory abilities.  We also provide urgent care for the surrounding community and exclusive residential boarding and bathing for our established clientele.  As a Specialty Veterinary Practice, it is our responsibility to our community, our patients, and our profession to maintain the highest of professional standards.

Dr. Cohen, an Internal Medicine Specialist for pets, was the very first with his credentials here in Orange County, California. Now, with over 30 years of experience, he remains on the progressive "cutting edge" of the veterinary profession while remaining constant in the hearts of those who entrust their pets to his expertise and comprehensive care. Throughout the years, whether Dr. Cohen was teaching young veterinarians, lecturing to practicing clinicians, or volunteering in an administrative capacity, he always remained "in the trenches" providing direct care for sick and injured animals.

    Examinations & Internal Medicine Consultations

As a Board Certified Specialist in Veterinary Internal Medicine, Dr. Cohen approaches evaluation of each pet, from that healthy puppy exam to an ear infection to heart disease or cancer, with an eye on the details. Most notably, our clients comment on Dr. Cohen's intellect, thoroughness, compassion, and sense of humor.

    Laboratory Services
The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital is complete with the in-house capability for processing various blood and urine tests for pre-anesthetic, follow-up, as well as STAT (emergency) evaluations for patients. Our outside reference laboratory additionally provides us with three times daily service processing of a vast array of advanced diagnostic procedures performed by Dr. Cohen.

     Radiology
Debra Cohen, who formerly instructed veterinary students at the teaching hospital at the Veterinary College at the University of California at Davis in radiography, provides Dr. Cohen with "teaching quality" radiographs (X-Rays) enabling faster and more accurate diagnoses. Additionally, Ms. Cohen radiographs thousands of dogs each year without the need for anesthetic agents or drugs for the various certifications, including those of hip and elbow dysplasia for the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA Information). With his Internal Medicine Specialty status, Dr. Cohen can certify dog Hearts and Patellas for the OFA organization as well. Please reference OFA Certification to our staff when calling for any of these services. Applications can be downloaded here from the OFA website.

    Echocardiography and Ultrasound
Dr. Cohen pioneered ultrasound in Southern California on the heart and abdomen in dogs and cats way back in the 1970's and has continued to be on the forefront of this diagnostic technology. Echocardiography, Color-Flow Doppler, Continous Wave Doppler, Abdominal ultrasonography, and Ultrasound guided fine needle aspirates or biopsies are among the procedures performed daily at The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital. With his respected expertise in cardiology, constant updating of equipment, large numbers of patient experiences, and extensive advanced training each year, Dr. Cohen remains an expert in this modality and provides frequent consultations on the subject to his colleagues and veterinary students.

    Flexible & Rigid VideoEndoscopy
For over 18 years, Dr. Cohen has been using flexible and rigid scopes for a variety of pet medical issues. Sometimes, he retrieves coins or small toys swallowed by overzealous puppies, or pulls blades of grass from the noses of sneezing cats; biopsies the small bowel of a cancer patient, or pulls a weed from the deep ear canal of a hunting dog, or a mineralized stone from a pet with a chronic urinary tract infection. For these patients, Dr. Cohen either avoided a surgery or performed a procedure that could not have been achieved without this equipment or his proficiency.

    Anesthesia & Surgery/Laser Surgery
As with his approach to medicine, Dr. Cohen's surgical technique and delicate handling of tissues is all about meticulous and watching all the details. After years of hands-on training with a Board Certified Veterinary Surgeon in his practice, Dr. Cohen provides quality surgical answers, albeit a routine cat spay, a 12-puppy C-section, various lump removals, an obstruction of the small bowel, or the emergencies of a twisted stomach (torsion) or to remove a ruptured spleen riddled with cancer to list just a sampling. Extensive patient monitoring and Dr. Cohen's propensity for carefulness, act in concert to reduce anesthetic risk so often worrisome to the pet owner. For the last 5 years, Dr. Cohen has added Laser Surgery to the repertoire of his hospital to increase surgical efficacy and comfort. Additionally, the doctor always refers his clients to the greater expertise of a Board Certified Veterinary Surgeon as required for the best interest of their pet.

    Laparoscopy/Laparoscopic Surgery
Building on his expertise in endoscopy, Dr. Cohen is trained in Laparoscopy, the use of specialized rigid scopes into the chest or abdominal cavities with related surgical applications. Rigid endoscopes in some cases carry remote-manipulation surgical tools in addition to providing a view of an internal body part. These techniques often provide a quick and relatively non-invasive means of obtaining answers that would otherwise require major surgery or expensive diagnostic testing. Further advantages of laparoscopy for the patient include a shortened anesthesia, better patient comfort, and more rapid recovery.

    Dental Care
Dr. Cohen is an advocate of good oral hygiene for his patients as research confirms dental disease can predispose to other organ diseases (esp. heart, liver and kidney diseases). We are pleased to offer routine veterinary dentistry and dental radiography (X-Rays) under anesthesia for those patients that require extensive oral medical care, need the relaxation of anesthesia, or when combined with additional anesthesia procedures. Additionally, we are happy to give our clients the option of having their pet's teeth thoroughly cleaned and polished without the need for sedation or anesthesia when appropriate under a veterinarian's supervision. We are proud to have the highly credentialed Mr. Jason P. Carr of Healthy Smiles for Pets available to perform these procedures. This method is safe, gentle, and a cost-effective way to incorporate dental health care into your pet's lifestyle, helping to eliminating halitosis, gingivitis, tooth loss, and a cascading list of diseases. Mr. Carr prepares a detailed mapping of each tooth with a complete evaluation of the oral cavity soft tissues for each patient for Dr. Cohen's review to facilitate their dental health and overall wellness.

    Residential Boarding & Bathing
We understand our patients often need to take a break and want to "check-in" when their owners go on holiday, when they have ongoing medication needs, or "just because." The hospital provides Residential Boarding strictly for our established clientele under Dr.Cohen's direct supervision. Naturally, we provide comprehensive bathing services for a variety of pet needs  including the important "feel good" factor as well as the elimination of the pesky flea, and medicated treatments for skin ailments.

    Related Services
Even beyond that Dr. Cohen provides specialty veterinary care for your pet on a routine basis, The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital provides a sundry of services and products you will find useful in your pet's life. Specialist Referral Information

We must ask that veterinary care unrelated to the referral problem, as well as health care for other pets, be tendered by your family veterinarian. This is an ethical necessity.
