About Animal Protection Society of Durham
   The Animal Protection Society of Durham has been helping animals since 1970. The APS of Durham is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and providing shelter for all animals. Our mission is to educate the public about the humane care and treatment of animals, promote spay/neuter and encourage the adoption of homeless animals.

We care for nearly 7,000 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens each year. Every day we provide safe, clean living quarters for hundreds of animals that come into our shelter.

In addition to providing shelter to animals, we also provide low-cost rabies and microchip clinics to the public and educational programs to local schools and civic groups.

We are a non-profit organization that relies on donations from our members and other donors in the community in order to fund these programs.

I have a roommate who doesn’t pull her weight around the house, stares at me in what appears to be a most judgmental manner, and sighs heavily when I don’t give her enough attention. Meet Zoe Harper, my 5-year old shepherd/chow/lab/pit/rotweiler/boxer(?) mix – she’s a rescue so I’m not sure about her background, I just know she has a very rich heritage, as everyone guesses something different when they meet her. Whatever she is, she’s a keeper – certainly more loyal, talented and athletic than I, and much better behaved. When we participated in the Dog Jog this year, she was kind enough to keep my pace, which meant her finish time wasn’t too impressive. Last year Zoe completed the canine good citizen program, certification designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. (I hope Zoe will act like a good citizen at the Pet Blessing – last time, she was a little too interested in the turtle in the row behind us.) And she has been referred to by many of my friends, even those who aren’t dog people, as “The Best Dog in the World.” When asked what she hopes to achieve next, Zoe yawned and turned over on her back in hopes of a tummy rub.
