About Animal Protection Society of Durham
The Animal Protection Society of Durham has been helping animals since 1970. The APS of Durham is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and providing shelter for all animals. Our mission is to educate the public about the humane care and treatment of animals, promote spay/neuter and encourage the adoption of homeless animals.

We care for nearly 7,000 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens each year. Every day we provide safe, clean living quarters for hundreds of animals that come into our shelter.

In addition to providing shelter to animals, we also provide low-cost rabies and microchip clinics to the public and educational programs to local schools and civic groups.

We are a non-profit organization that relies on donations from our members and other donors in the community in order to fund these programs.

We adopted Dougal from lucky Kennel # 13 on July 13, 2006 after falling in love with his gorgeous hazel eyes and playful personality. We affectionately call him Dougal-Dan, in true North Carolina fashion, and he is our beloved bow-legged Beagle/Basset Hound. He loves to play outside and be around people and other dogs. His favorite game is to chase and/or be chased, and bark while doing so. He's such a sweet and clumsy guy who loves to sleep and snuggle up next to the nearest person. Most chairs are too small for his long frame, but nonetheless he likes to lay length-wise in them and therefore scrunch his head in a very amusing manner. He has the cutest way of laying down and plopping his back legs out, and his sad eyes are irresistible. We love Dougal and are so grateful that APS kept him safe and happy until we could find him! He will continue to brighten our lives for years to come, and will surely enjoy countless trips to the Sarah P. Duke Gardens to harass the ducks and smell all of he smells. Regards,
~Taylor and Andrew
