About Animal Protection Society of Durham
The Animal Protection Society of Durham has been helping animals since 1970. The APS of Durham is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and providing shelter for all animals. Our mission is to educate the public about the humane care and treatment of animals, promote spay/neuter and encourage the adoption of homeless animals.

We care for nearly 7,000 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens each year. Every day we provide safe, clean living quarters for hundreds of animals that come into our shelter.

In addition to providing shelter to animals, we also provide low-cost rabies and microchip clinics to the public and educational programs to local schools and civic groups.

We are a non-profit organization that relies on donations from our members and other donors in the community in order to fund these programs.

Lois Gabrych: APS October Volunteer of the Month.

The APS of Durham is pleased to honor Lois Gabrych as October’s Volunteer of the Month. Lois is no stranger to the APS or volunteering at the Durham County Animal Shelter. She actually volunteered here over ten years ago with her husband Richard. They would come in on weekends and holidays and help with the feeding of the dogs. She returned as a volunteer this year and has helped both with walking dogs and cleaning the cat rooms.

Lois’s work ethic and enthusiasm would be impressive for anyone but considering she is 81 years old they are simply outstanding traits. She is able to accomplish so much and makes such a huge difference to the workload on the days she volunteers. While many retirees would take a justified rest from work, Lois continues to give of her time and energy and is a pleasure to be around because of her smile and willingness to help wherever help is most needed.

Lois was born in Raleigh, attended Ohio State and then lived in California for a number of years before returning to North Carolina. She worked as a teacher and speech therapist for 36 years and has a son, a granddaughter and 2 cats. Lois enjoys reading, traveling and playing the piano. Our staff and volunteers are frequently treated to her baked goods as well.

It is obvious to those of us who get to work with her at the shelter how much she enjoys being here with the animals and how much she gets out of life. Thank you, Lois, for your boundless energy and hard work. You are an example for us all to follow!
