can you have a pet opossum? i did her name was april yeah i got her in april 2007 but she was really little and sheba was runing around with that poor little opossum in her mouth but we ran around for a while trying to catch her to get the animal and sheba droped her in a puddle we got a rag and dryed her off and put her in a box in the garage. the next day we called the vet and the vet said he can't give her shots but he knows alot of people with opossums for pets. we got her a box with a lid (not air tight)we could hold her without a glove and feed her apple sauce we called someone else and they said that the fleas could get on my dogs and make them really sick so we had to release her.....i'll upload some pictures later.

You are not supposed to keep "wild animals" unless you have a license to do so.  Possums do make great pets, they are much like cats and are very clean when in captivity.  They can carry some pretty bad diseases that can be passed on to dogs like Parvo, etc.  they can also carry rabies.  However, as a vet told me once, if the mother and little ones make it thru birth without being road kill they are probably fine.  We did not have any trouble with ours, but did let her go when she was big enough to fend for herself.  I kept cat food out for her so she would be able to make the transition.
