I'm wondering if anyone is aware of a technique to teach cats to cover better in the litter box.  I have two kittens (sisters), one snowshoe and one siamese, and they do not cover enough and "share" their business with the rest of us.  I love them, but not their litter box "prizes." Embarassed

Welcome to the wonderful world of a multi cat household.  Cats are very territorial and are so from a very young age.  You have to littermates in your home that are vying for dominance.  I have a possible reason for the "lack of coverage" and several possible solutions.  I have several cats, and when they fail to cover it is to make sure the other cat is aware of its presence.  It usually is a territorial issue.  First solution is get another litter box.  Ideally there should be one box per cat plus one extra.  Alot of cats don't like to defecate and urinate in the same location, and they often don't like to share their boxes.  Littermates or not cats are very territorial beings and without proper training now, they may start to exhibit other territorial trademarks I.E. spraying, scratching your furniture or shoes, or defecating outside of the box.  I suggest getting another box or two and seeing how it goes.  They may never cover all the way.  Another thing, try a different litter, some cats are finicky as to the feel of the litter on their paws and won't cover if the feel is unplesant.  Give it a try and let us know how it goes

Thank you for your suggestion.  I have wondered about them sharing a box, but since I acquired them from a foster home with several cats sharing litter boxes, I figured they had already "adjusted" to sharing a litter box.  I will try it and I will let you know how it goes.  Thanks, again!

Well, it's been a couple of weeks since we added the extra litter box.  At first, I thought it was going to be the answer to our problem.  However, it did not last long.  It was good for a couple of days, but they are back to not covering so good.  I am going to try a different type of litter.  I bought this litter originally because it did help with the smell, but maybe they don't like the feel of it.  I'll keep you posted. Not only would i try a different litter, but also make sure that each litter box is in completely separate parts of the house.  It kind of gives them that privacy they like.. Cool
