Being a Suitable Owner - Finding one can be a breeder's nightmare!
Deciding to become a breeder requires that you know how to judge people. You are committing yourself to not only raise pups properly while in your care, but also to finding a suitable owner that will provide the pup with the kind of life it deserves.
Anyone who decides to breed needs to be certain the owner they agree to sell the pup to is willing to provide a home full of love. Dobermans love being taken in as part of the family. Anyone whose primary concern is as a security dog should not be sold a Doberman. Encourage these folks to rescue one from a shelter.
Things to look for in an owner are stories about past dogs they have owned. If someone is grieving the loss of a past pet, that is a pretty good sign they will take in a new canine member and make it a four-legged child!
When a potential owner readily offers up references, especially their vet's phone number, that is also a good sign that they are willing to do what it takes long term to properly care for the pup on into adulthood. When the temperament of the dobe is questioned, that is a good sign the potential owner is not simply looking for a guard dog, rather a dog that will be good around people and especially children.
A good rule of thumb, the more questions asked, the better the odds that the owner is willing to take the pup in and make it part of the family.
