Zoos Recycle with Exotic Doo
We’re all doing our part these days to help with the recycling effort it seems. However, this recent attempt by Zoos to recycle animal dung is quite unusual. Yes, zoos around the country are gathering the leavings of many of their larger animals for use in a home grown kind of exotic manure for the grounds. Popularly nicknamed, Zoo Doo, this exotic manure fertilizer is quite healthy for the plants and contains plenty of natural ingredients.
On such Zoo is the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky where they have aptly named their product, Zoo Poopy Doo. A little too kiddy like for my linguistic tastes but the name gets the point across.
The Louisville Zoo mix of manure contains contributions from a variety of animals including the mainly hoofed creatures such as elephants, rhinos, camels, and giraffes. The already fibrous product is then mixed with hay, straw and wood shavings. To improve on this already aromatic mixture and officially turn it into manure it is cooked via turning and watering it for three months to get rid of any bacteria and change the texture and quality of the manure. Once done it will be dry and crumbly ready to add to any garden or grassy area.
Zoo Poopy Doo was introduced by Assistant Director Mark Zoeller at the Louisville Zoo, but other Zoos making use of their own exotic manure have their own ‘Zoellers’ to thank to this intriguing recycling process.
The Exotic animal manure is popular because it improves the aeration of the soil; increases root penetration and water retention and reducing the crusting of surface soil.
The Louisville Zoo offers their Zoo Poody Doo product for $30 a scoop during a festival of Sale Saturdays with a small booth set up in the Zoo’s parking lot.

There’s an election going on in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky that involved paying for votes. A highly questionable practice to be sure! However, those paying out cash are paying for the right to vote in the race for honorary mayor of the northern Kentucky town along the Ohio River. And, those running in the race are all animals! Not in the moral sense of course, but literally.
Rabbit Hash’s last honorary mayor was one Junior, a black Labrador retriever who held the post from 2004 until he died in May. While this mayor didn’t pass any new laws he did hold an esteemed and well respected position within the local community.
Now that the position is open there is a real influx of takers for it with seven different dogs, a cat and a donkey entering the electorial race. There’s a lot of competition for the position and supporters of each of the animals running will have a chance to put in as many votes as they want. The Rabbit Hash Historical Society running the small town is allowing folks to place as many votes as they want for $1 each. So, they can literally stuff the ballot boxes! All of the proceeds from this election will be going to the Rabbit Hash Historical Society by the way.
A number of animal candidates had posters created to market their campaigns. There were posters for Travis the cat ‘A Cat for Change’ and posters for Molly ‘Bet on the Boxer’ plus a poster for Noggin ‘The Thinking Man’s Mayor’.

A turtle that belonged to a British television show actress survived an amazing ordeal recently in a recycling plant. The turtle, nicknamed Tom, is a 55 year old tortoise who lives with award winning TV comedy actress Ruth Jones and her husband. However, a few weeks ago he went on the Lam. This hunky land rover it’s about the size of a puppy and apparently has one heck of a hard shell.
This turtle ran away from home and was on the Lam for about five weeks before he showed up at recycling center. Apparently, the tortoise had snapped into one of the green recycling bags in the home of Ruth Jones and he was later picked up by accident by a recycling vehicle in Penylan where she lives.
It’s believed that Tom the tortoise had spent a month living in the Dom before being picked up and moved to the recycling facility this past Sunday. Once in the facility he was dumped into a glass sorting conveyor belt. From here he survived large rotating spikes that ripped open the green recycling bags and then entered a glass of crusher designed to break the glass bottles into easily melted pieces. After surviving this gambit of doom that word is was finally rescued by staff members and pulled from the belt.
It seems that they noticed the tortoise at the first checkpoint but were unable to crab him before entering the glass crusher.
When Ruth Jones realized her pet was missing she and her hubby went on the alert putting up posters. They also alerted the local counsel with a description of the pet tortoise. The Cardiff council, knowing about the missing tortoise alerted the Joneses and he was reconciled with his owner after escaping. The tortoise named Tom is back home recovering from his exciting adventure.

In West Virginia a large puppy mill operation has been shut down. This could the largest number of animals rescued by SPCA officials so far with them taking more than 1,000 animals into SPCA care. I can’t even begin to imagine where they are going to find places for all of those animals.
The puppy mill is in the city of Parkersburg harbours mostly purebred Dachshunds. The owner, Sharon Roberts, of this mill called, Whispering Oaks Kennel, willingly surrendered the dogs. The Humane Society called the kennel a puppy mill after inspecting the facility with Sheriff’s Deputies.
They noted that the animals were kept in cages and dilapidated sheds for breeding. They were never let out and rarely handled by humans. SPCA officials also stated that it didn’t appear that the animals were being abused, but it’s just about impossible to take care of that many animals.
Roberts was not charged with animal neglect or cruelty charges but she has agreed never to operate a dog breeding facility ever again. On the other hand, she’s stated to the Associated Press that she was the victim of a ‘witch hunt’ by animal rights activists.
Scotlund Haisley, Senior Director of the Emergency Services at the Humane Society stated, ‘These resilient little animals are already beginning to perk up under the care of their temporary guardians at the emergency shelter… Thankfully they will soon be taken in by humane organizations around the region, evaluated and put up for adoption.’
The Humane Society is currently still in the process of removing animals from the puppy mill. They state that most of the animals that come from puppy mills lack socialization and are in poor healthy. Each of these dogs will need to be examined by a veterinarian when they arrive at the Virginia Beach SPCA shelter. They will also assess the dogs behaviourally to determine the best socialization program to get them ready for adoption.

New research has found that monkeys seem inclined towards sharing equally with their fellows. Researchers found that Capuchin monkeys will consistently share food with others if given the option.
These U.S. researchers at the Yerkes Research Center at Emory University in Atlanta reported last Monday that tests they completed on Capuchin monkeys show they are capable of empathy. Well duh! As if anyone who has owned a pet would think that animals are incapable of empathy.
Frans de Waal, director or the Living Links Center at Yerkes stated, ‘They seem to care for the welfare of those they know… Subjects systematically favoured the prosocial option provided their partner was a) familiar, b) visible, and c) receiving rewards of equal value… We believe prosocial behaviour is empathy based. Empathy increases in both humans and animals with social closeness, and in our study, closer partners made more prosocial choices."
The team tested 8 female brown Capuchin Monkeys in pairs, with one monkey from each pair making a selection that would either benefits solely themselves or benefit themselves and the other monkey. The researchers provided two tokens to the monkey making the selection. One token would reward the monkey with a treat, while the other token would reward both monkeys with a treat. In both cases the choosing monkey got the same amount of food. However, the researchers found that the monkey consistently chose the token which would give food to both her and her companion.
The researchers will next perform tests to see whether or not these monkeys share food because they are rewarded by companionship while eating or if they enjoy seeing another monkey also enjoying food.
Concerning this the researchers wrote, ‘Capuchin monkeys spontaneously share food in both nature and captivity, and commonly sit next to each other while eating.’

There are still plenty of paranormal activities still going on in Salem, Massachusetts despite the onset of modern life. This city is well-known for its tragic history involving the witch trials of the 1700s. Now, it’s more appreciated as an alternative tourist destination for history buffs and fans of the paranormal.
As such Salem supports a healthy paranormal and psychic reading industry. However, they require licensing for all of their psychics and tarot readers. One such psychic got in a bit of hot water recently for giving people’s pets psychic readings without a license.
Willow is a pet psychic who until recently worked at Penelope’s Pet Boutique on Washington Street. Previously, she had been working as a tarot card reader at the shop, Fools’ Mansion for nearly a decade.
The pawrifffic reader worked at Penelope’s for only about two weeks before she was shut down by the city over licensing concerns. Though, I’m wondering what kind of license you need to give people’s pets a psychic reading anyway.
The Pet Shop owner, Karen Caccavaro states, ‘I got all positive feedback…It was cute; people loved it. I wouldn’t jeopardize my business for something that is not good.’
Caccavaro even claims that Willow helped her to better understand her own pet Chihuahua, named Penelope, when the small pooch had taken to hiding under the bed. Caccavaro said Willow told her that, ‘she needed more attention.’
It’s still uncertain whether or not Willow will be reading pets at Penelope’s Boutique again in the future. She has made a trip down to city hall to apply for a tarot reading license at her other store, Coons Card and Gift Shop on Essex Street. This was when the city told her she couldn’t read pets without a license. However, I’ll ask again…what kind of license do you need to give a pet a psychic reading?

We know dogs are man’s best friend but this story is a amazing and shows the true heart of dogs and their friendship with mankind. Earlier this week a newborn baby was found abandoned outdoors in Argentina. In this area of the world it is winter weather where the nighttime temperatures can drop two chilly degrees although they aren’t freezing, it is still potentially harmful to a newborn child.
Luckily, this newborn baby was found safe in a dog and being cared for by a mother dog and her brood of puppies. The baby was being kept warm by the puppies and the mother dog in her pen this Thursday. The dog belongs to Farmer Fabio Anze who said that he called the police and the baby was taken to the hospital.
Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero hospital stated to television and newspaper reporters that the baby appeared to be a few hours old when she was found and she appears to be in good health although she has some bruises.
Interestingly enough, it’s not known if the dog, named China, found the baby and brought her back to the pen to keep safe or if the mother abandoned to the baby in the pen.
Police did state that they found the fourteen year old girl who had given birth to the baby outdoors during the night on Wednesday.
It always amazes me when stories like this appear in the news. Dogs, cats even larger animals and supposedly a wild creatures like a gorillas and tigers keeping human babies and children safe from harm until their parents can find them. It kind of shows how much these animals understand about human needs and the importance of keeping each other safe.

Here is such a sad, sad ending to a sad story. You may remember the story about the baby humpback whale who was lost in an Australian harbor and attempting to suckle boats for nourishment. There was some discussion about having to euthanize the baby whale and it seems a officials decided to go ahead and do that on Friday, August 22.
This decision came after physicians and marine researchers examined the baby whale and decided that its condition was so poor that euthanasia was the most humane thing for it.
Sally Barnes, Deputy Director General of the New South Wales Department Of Environment And Climate Change stated, “We have a whale whose condition has deteriorated rapidly over the last 24 hours, and who now experts are telling us is suffering, and we’ve had to make the hard decision to euthanize the whale…It’s a very emotional decision.”
The officials had sought national and international advice on how best to take care of the lost whale, however its condition was just too far gone. The poor baby whale was unable to make contact with larger adult whales after several attempts to guide the whale back to open waters had failed.
Reporters and rescue groups were blocked from trying to get to the whale before it could be euthanized by maritime police. Many wildlife officials have accused these wildlife officials of not doing enough to try and help the baby or feed it.
It took officials awhile to locate the baby whale in the waters of Pittwater Inlet and when it was finally located they moved ahead with their plans to sedate it and then administering a fatal dose of drugs.
It’s too bad that things had to end this way for the baby whale and officials couldn’t take care of it before its condition deteriorated.

The researchers led by Karl Franklin of University Hospital in Umea, Sweden have determined that children with pets are more likely to become snorers when they grow up. That’s right if you’ve got a pet you are probably a snorer.
This new study has shown that a tendency to snore is established early in life and one of the child would risk factors associated with snoring was exposure to animals, along with early respiratory and ear infections and strangely, living in a large family.
This can even occur when they’re just babies. New words in contact with dogs were the most likely candidates to become nocturnal snorers when they grow up. The researchers suggested in their study, ‘These factors may enhance inflammatory processes and thereby alter upper airway anatomy early in life, causing an increased susceptibility for adult snoring,’
Snoring is caused by the vibrating of the soft palet inside the throat and mouth. It is not as funny as it would seem because it causes a variety of health complaints such as; sleep deprivation, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks, strokes and even premature death.
Just about 18% of the 15,500 randomly selected people from Nordic countries fit the profile of habitual snorers. Habitual snoring is defined as, Loud and disturbing snoring that occurs three or more nights in a week.
There are a variety of treatments for snoring from surgical to nonsurgical. Some possibilities for the chronic snorer are; behavioral changes, dental devices, nasal devices and medications or you been a nasal CPAP. While some chronic snorers go as far as surgery to reduce the obstruction that could be causing their snoring.
So if you are currently a loud snore then you may be able to blame your pet dog or cat from when you were a kid. This study was published in the Britain based BioMed Central’s Journal, Respiratory Research.

Some of you may have seen the story on Good Morning America about the two college students who were pulled over by San Marcos police officers as they were attempting to rush their injured dog to an all night veterinarian clinic in New Braunfels. They were speeding going up to 95mph on the highways after midnight on August 5 when the officer pulled over Michael Gonzalez and his girlfriend, Krystal Hernandez.
The two were obviously distraught and in no condition to drive. However, the brouhaha isn’t over whether they were right to pullover the students, but how the police officer and other officers who arrived later handled the traffic stop.
The officer who pulled them over, one Paul Stevens, is recorded on his dashboard camera tape as saying ‘it’s just a dog’ when the students told him they were trying to save their pet. Their dog was a toy cup poodle, named Missy. They were rushing her from their home near Texas state university in San Marcos to the all night vet clinic day after the dog choked on her food and went limp.
However, the police officer kept the two college students at the traffic stop for twenty minutes while they waited for him to issue a ticket for speeding and while he decided to chat with two other police officers who arrived at the scene. Michael and Krystal state that their little dog died while they were forced to wait on the police officer who told a distraught Gonzalez, ‘It’s just a dog. You can buy another one. Relax.’
Officer Paul Stevens was a reprimanded and his supervisor watched the dashboard tape of the traffic stop with him and counseled him on how to improve his performance. However, lots of people who’ve seen the story are claiming they want more to happen to the police office who impeded the students in their attempt to save a beloved pet.

In Sydney, Australia hopes are fading for a baby whale that was abandoned by its mother. The whale was seeing trying to suckle from the yachts in the Australian harbor over the past weak in a desperate attempt to find a surrogate for its own mother. It has been about five days since the baby whale was noticed in the harbor and it appears to be getting weaker.
Wildlife Rangers attempted to lure the baby whale out to sea using a yacht to which it appeared particularly attached. They were able to get it out to sea where they hoped it would link up with other humpback whales has seen the area during their annual breeding migration. Unfortunately the calf failed to find its own mother or surrogates and so returned to the yacht moorings in the harbor.
It was noticed today by sailor Peter Lewis who was woken at his mooring in Pittwater Bay near Sydney’s Palm Beach by strange sounds on the outside hull of his boat. He stated, ‘It sounded like a bit of a vacuum cleaner on the bottom of the boat. I finally got up and here's this whale suckling the side of the boat… It was a very, very sad sight… it just seemed to give a sigh out at one stage as if, you know, this isn't working,’
Experts believe the whale cap has only days to live and the only way to end its suffering might just be euthanasia. However, public concern over the baby whale’s fate has prompted one scientist to suggest the baby whale could be fed formula milk for human babies through an artificial seat until a plan is created to help the baby get back to sea with a herd of adults. Yet, experts close to the situation said this was not an option.

In Rome, Italy 60 newly hatched sea turtles almost ended up as the main course at an Italian restaurant last Monday. These poor little sea turtles lost their way after hatching on the beach near the Italian restaurant and ended up wondering inside instead of into the ocean.
Antonio Colucci works on turtle monitoring projects for the conservation group, the world wide fund for nature (WWF) was called in to help rescue the turtles before they turned into dinner. He stated, ”They saw the artificial lights and took the wrong route… The diners were at first quite curious and then someone alerted the coastal authorities."
Most sea turtles live for about 80 years and return to the place where they were born to nest and late eggs every single year. It takes 30 years for an adult female sea turtle to mature fully before she returns to the beach to lay eggs. After about two months the eggs hatch and hundreds of little sea turtles will crawl up at the beach towards the ocean where they will continue the life cycle.
However, on occasion the baby hatchlings will get lost on the way to the ocean. It is believed that baby sea turtles are guided tour of the ocean by the light of the moon as it hovers over the sea when they hatch in mass. Yet, the recent development of coastal property has created a lot of light pollution at night. This light pollution sometimes confuses baby turtles when they hatch and they’ll start marching towards it instead of the ocean like these baby turtles did in Rome.
On occasions like this rescue workers must go in and turn the baby hatchlings around. These stranded turtles who hatched on a beach in the southern Italian region of the Calabria were captured and released into the sea.

A woman living in Monroe, Ohio was recently arrested on a range of charges including animal cruelty recently. This all occurred after her pet Doberman Pincher was found wandering the streets. That’s not the worst of it! The Doberman was severely malnourished and weighed only 28 pounds!
The poor dog is so skinny you can just about all of her bones. The dog is also an unusual coloring, practically white in an off tan shade. Whether this is from the malnourishment or just a natural color for the dog isn’t stated. The Doberman pinscher, named Sheba, also has pale blue eyes.
Sheba’s owner, Reita Huff was first identified as the dog’s owner and pulled over last Wednesday. She had been pulled over on Ohio 4 for operating an unsafe vehicle. While speaking with the officer who pulled her over she became combative and was shot with a Taser.
Huff was later charged with resisting arrest, assault on a police officer, two counts of cruelty to a companion animal, failure to confine and failure to obtain a license. This woman is not having a good week.
According to the Butler County Dog Warden Julie Holmes, Huff has prior animal violations. She’s been in trouble before…
Humane Society Executive Director Meg Stephenson, ‘This is one of the worst cases of neglect I have seen… Every bone in her body was visible. No animal should ever have to suffer like that.’
Sheba the 2 year old Doberman pinscher is doing well in foster care. She gained five pounds while in the care of Animal Friends Officials and a few more pounds in the care of a foster couple. The couple has 2 other dogs and being lavished with food and care.

For those of you that didn’t know, yesterday was Elvis Presley’s Birthday. That’s okay, because I didn’t know either. Not until I read about what the Metro Animal Services Shelter in Louisville, Kentucky did to celebrate his big day.
They got four staff members to dress up like Elvis and offered specials in order to boost pet adoptions.
Assistant Director Jackie Gulbe who dressed in a white jumpsuit with gold trim stated, ‘The staff is always trying to come up with clever ways to promote our adoptions…We hope a lot of our animal-loving Elvis fans will help many of our homeless cats and dogs.”
As a part of their Homeless Hounds and Cool Cats Promotions the shelter reduced their standard adoption fees to about $100 for a dog and $50 for a cat. Plus, anyone who showed up yesterday dressed as Elvis got an even bigger discount, just $77 for dogs and $35 for cats. Elvis Presley was born in 1935 and died in 1977.
They got several people adopting pets yesterday, but no one decided to dress up like Elvis for that additional discount.
One such adoptive family came in the form of Tonya Easterday and Angela McGuire, who had been coming to the shelter for two months. They were surprised by the shelter celebration, but that didn’t stop them from finally adopting a 7-month old pit bull.
They stated, ‘"It's funny to see some of the staff that you see every day walking around in wigs and jumpsuits, but it's a good cause and a good way to have people come out and adopt…We feel like we're bringing home a new baby.”
The Elvis Presley Celebration was the idea of Assistant Director Gulbe who has been an Elvis Presley Fan since she first saw him at 12 years of age.

Leave your own comments by clicking here.8 Signs From Animals that the Planet is Changing
Researchers have been telling us for years that our world is in danger from a variety of ill involving pollution, overcrowding, and that pesky Global Warming thing. Now, it seems to be more real, and more threatening than ever before with recent changes in the animal kingdom indicating things are out of whack!
I found some recent examples online of weird changes in the climate and nature that are big signs things are out of whack:
1. Animals Migrating Earlier
Researchers have found that many bird species are making their seasonal migrations earlier than usual because of changing cues in the climate; like trees changing colors too soon.
2. Dramatic increase in Jellyfish populations
There is an incredible outbreak in Jellyfish in the oceans across the world. It seems these jellyfish have caught a ride on the hulls of ships circumnavigating the globe.
3. Our Food Chain is Contaminated
Researchers stated last month that they have found toxic pollutants in nine deep-sea species of cephalopods, which is a class of molluscs including octopuses, squid and nautiluses. This shows that toxins can make it deep into our food chain.
4. Reptiles and Amphibians fleeing to cooler climates
Up to thirty species of reptiles and amphibians have been found to be fleeing uphill to cooler climates.
5. Rapid decline in penguin population
Penguins are going extinct quite rapidly facing melting ice, oil pollution, depletion of fisheries and aggressive coastline development.
6. Ocean Life shifting in composition
Marine life is shifting in the ocean. There are more warm water creatures than cold water and fewer bottom feeding animals and more of those that feed higher in the water column.
7. Warm weather animals migrating to previously cool climates
Parasites and small creatures like snails and insects used to warm climes are suddenly moving into previously cooler places. For example, snails have proliferated in Scotland where temperatures are rising.
8. Food shortages in wild
Since climates are changing sooner than before, food sources are peaking and dying off before migrating animals have a change to reach them. This results in a food shortage and starvation.
Some of these are pretty major changes happening in a very short period of time, especially when considering nature likes to take things nice and slow when making changes to the environment. Eventually, these problems like contaminated food and migrating species will start affecting us in a major way.

Oh I’m so depressed! It looks like the latest Bigfoot claim is a Big Fake! For those of you who were interested, two men from Georgia claimed to have found the body of Bigfoot and put it in a large storage freezer several weeks ago. These guys were so confident of their find that they managed to get the interest of Tom Biscardi, known as the ‘real Bigfoot hunter’ for his long publicized interest in the man beast.
Earlier today, the three men held a press conference in Palo Alto, California where they described the body, held up several photos of other Bigfeet that they managed to snap pictures of in the Georgia area and of course stated their intent to have someone autopsy the body. They then went on to provide DNA results from testing of a few samples taken from the Bigfoot body.
The DNA tests of two samples were conducted by Curt Nelson, a scientist at the University of Minnesota. However, the results indicated that one sample was human DNA and the other was 96% Opossum DNA. Unless Bigfoot is related to the Opossum I think we’ve got a problem here.
Since this evidence is contrary to their claims I’m wondering why Biscardi even distributed it at the press conference. He did state that the samples may not have been taken properly and that they may have been contaminated. He also stated that he plans on proceeding with an autopsy of the Bigfoot remains.
So far, it’s not looking so good for the Bigfoot claimants, but maybe an autopsy will indicate for sure whether or not these remains come with a costume store zipper.

Researchers claim to have figured out the reason why sea turtles are built like deep sea divers if they only dive deeply on rare occasions. See Turtles usually live in the shallow water or spend time on land and they very rarely go deep sea diving. However they are built to plumb the icy depths of the ocean. For example, sea turtles have myoglobin-rich blood which stores extra oxygen. Some turtles have been observed to loiter at the surface of the ocean for several hours before diving as deep as ¾ of a mile below the surface of the ocean. It's thought that they're staying on the surface of the water to help enrich their blood with extra oxygen before that deep dive. Jonathan Houghton and colleagues from the University of Swansea in Britain conducted experiments designed to figure out why leatherback turtles are built for deep dives and where they go. They fitted thirteen turtles with data loggers to record location, temperature, dived depth, and duration as well as transmitting the information to satellites whenever the sea turtles surfaced. Of the 26,000 dives logged by these sea turtles all across the North Atlantic ocean, only 95 of them went well below 300m. So why do the sea turtles do this? That team decided based on the information they recorded that the leatherbacks are diving on reconnaissance missions. They'd normally feast on surface jellyfish, but during the time they spend traveling from their tropical breeding grounds in the Caribbean they rely on other jellyfish-like animals for food. These are animals that dwell at about 600m below the surface of the ocean during the day. The team believes that these turtles are diving to such great depths during the day to find these Colonies of jellyfish-like animals. At night these Colonies rise to the surface so it makes sense that the turtles would seek them out during the day to note their location and wait for them to surface at night for a lazy feast. So they found Bigfoot! Or at least that’s what two guys from Georgia are saying today. Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer who live in Georgia often lead Bigfoot tracking expeditions through the wilderness. They claim to have found the body of a deceased Bigfoot in the woods of Northern Georgia.
They, along with Tom Biscardi, will present the body, along with pictures and footprints at a news conference in Palo Alto, California on Friday, August 15th, 2008. They state that Bigfoot has flat feet measuring about 16 3/3 inches long and that the length of its hand from the palm to the tip of the middle finger is 11 ½ inches long.
Matthew Whitton is a police officer in Clayton County, Georgia and Rick Dyer is a former correctional officer. They are not at the moment saying where the body was found. Nor are they indicating where it is now.
However, Tom Biscardi a well-known Bigfoot tracker working with the men said that DNA tests are currently being conducted on the Bigfoot and that a team of scientists will be able to study the body. They will allow a molecular biologist, anthropologist, palaeontologist and other scientists to look at the body over the next few months at a ‘secured location’ under armed guard.
All of this cloak and dagger stuff is certainly hyping interest in the group’s claim. Whether or not they have the proof to back it up remains to be seen. Although, I’m willing to keep an open mind until the news conference.

HUD, for the department of housing and urban development has filed a discrimination charges against a no pet cooperative building in Rockville centre. The reason for the discrimination charges, the owners and Ford of the building tried to evict the dog of a 90 year old woman named Mary Pasko whom she keeps for emotional support.
Mrs. Pasko is diagnosed with depression, arthritis, a spinal disorder and other illnesses lives with her daughter in the cooperative. Hr dog, a very old toy poodle named, cocoa gives her reason to get up from bed in the morning and barks when she knows her owner need something.
Mary says of her dog, “I don't think I'd be around if it wasn't for her… She's like medicine for me. If I have her with me, I seem to feel better."
However, the board at the Hartley house sued to evict the dog and Mrs. Pasko’s daughter Joan Anzelone, which would mean that Mrs. Pasko would also leave. The daughter filed a complaint but board members responded that cocoa was simply a, companion pet, as there was no proof that she helps her mother’s depression.
The board states that cocoa was originally only supposed to stay temporarily. Plus, Mrs. Pasko moved in with her daughter without cocoa seven years ago. Cocoa had been left with another daughter living in Pennsylvania. The other daughter and cocoa traveled to visit Mrs. Pasko in the cooperative for several years until the other daughter died two years ago. Cocoa then came to live with Mrs. Pasko in the cooperative.
HUD has filed a discrimination charges because the fair housing act calls for, reasonable accommodation, on notepad policies for people who have physical and mental disabilities once a doctor’s note is provided. Mrs. Pasko has a doctor’s note from her psychologist.
The case is going to be heard by an administrative law judge or in the Federal court.

A new study by Atsushi Sendju and colleagues at the Birkbeck College in London have found evidence indicating that dogs have at least some rudimentary capacity for empathy. They found this evidence in realizing that contagious yawning affects dogs as well as it does people.
You may be familiar with contagious yawning, which is a yawn triggered by seeing another person yawning. Contagious yawning can spread like wildfire through public meetings, restaurants, and even movie theaters. Yawning has a very infectious quality and it has been shown that seeing another person yawning or just thinking about yawning can trigger the act and it’s considered a kind of positive feedback. Yet, the exact reasons and causes of yawning are still undetermined. Some believe that it’s caused by a lack of oxygen while others believe that yawning is related to nervousness and tension or may help increase the alertness of a person. Previously, contagious yawning has only been shown to occur in people and chimpanzees.
However, it seems that dogs are also highly sensitive to contagious yawning. A series of simple tests revealed 72% of 29 dogs involved in the testing yawned after observing a person yawning. It’s a little over twenty dogs and the other dogs may have felt an urge to yawn, we just don’t know because we have yet to break the language barrier.
This information was revealed Wednesday in the journal, biology letters, by Atsushi Senju and colleagues.
They wrote that the results from this testing indicate dogs were skilled in reading Human social cues and their contagious yawning ‘may relate to their capacity for empathy’. Of course, those of us who have owned dogs before already knew that they were very empathic beings. You only need to look in the eyes of your beloved pet to see the truth.

Some of you may remember the story about the overweight tabby cat who was abandoned in Blackwood, New Jersey. When well the cat aptly named, Prince Chunk, by animal shelter facility workers has finally found a permanent home.
The cat waited 44lbs. when he was left at the animal shelter and veterinarians wondered if he had a health condition that might be adding to his weight. Since, the prince had been eating normally at the shelter rather than attempting to the more than his fair share of food.
When the story broke about this large tabby cat some 400 people applied to adopt this ten year old cat who certainly had a weight problem. He went from an unwanted kitty wandering around Voorhees to one of the most popular cats in the shelter.
The Camden county animal shelter picked the family in south jersey who already owned to other cats. They also have a teenager and are eager for the new addition to their family. Catherine Harr, president of the animal shelters board, said the family was already building a mini castle to place over the cat’s new litter box. Prince Chunk will move in with his new family next week. The family was chosen because they had previous experience with cats and their finances were stable unlike the cat’s former owner who had to give up Prince Chunk due to foreclosure.
In the meantime he has been looked over by a veterinarian and given a clean bill of health. They were concerned that the head of viral need condition but it appears he does not. To help get his way to under control the veterinarians have prescribed a high protein, low carb diet for the cat.

In a small
On July 29 the SWAT team from
In the midst of the raid police officers shot the two dogs owned by the Mayor and his wife, feeling threatened by their behavior. They also kept the Mayor and his mother-in-law bound for two hours while sorting out the events of the day.
Police now believe that the Mayor and his wife were victims of a scheme that sent packages to the homes of unsuspecting recipients. The packages would arrive when no one was home and another person would come in and grab the package off the doorstep before the homeowners got back. Anyone who’s had a package delivered by FedEx is familiar with their tendency to just knock on the door and leave packages, assuming whoever’s home will come and pick it up.
Police Chief Melvin High called the Mayor to inform him that they were no longer suspects and to express his sorrow and regret for the loss of the family’s beloved dogs. However, he stopped short of apologizing for the way the drug raid was carried out. The police department is looking into the narcotics investigation that resulted in the raid on the mayor’s house and the

The common story you normally hear is that a dog or cat saves someone from a burning home, not the other way around!
However, this dog was saved from the burning flames engulfing a suburban home by a neighbour. Talk about amazing story!
In Weymouth, Massachusetts a dog, a German Shepard named Isabel, was caught in a house in Webosset Street as it went up in flames. The homeowners were away at the time, but the dog remained locked up at home alone.
Neighbors noticed the fire and reported it. They also attempted to rescue the the dog by bringing over a ladder and breaking a window on the house as flames leaped up through the roof. Unable to coax the dog to safety a man, Sal Litterio actually pulled the dog out of the burning home through a broken window.
Of saving the dog he stated, “"I called the dog. It was scared. Isabel jumped up on the ledge. I grabbed Isabel, passed it out to Ellie.”
Ellie being, Ellie Cleary, another neighbour who helped save Isabel. She’s stated of Isabel, “Even when we scrapped her hind leg coming across the sill for the screen, she never whimpered or anything. She was awesome."
Both are alive, but the man who saved the dog had to be put on oxygen because of the heavy smoke in the house.

Talk about loyalty amongst pets, this cat walked ten miles home just to have her kittens in a familiar place.
David James, of Jeffersonville, Indiana gave away his pregnant cat to a man living on a farm in Sellersburg. The farm is more than ten miles from his home. The cat was named Biscuit, and she along with several other cats were given to the man to live on the farm and enjoy a life in the country after he and his wife could no longer keep them in their apartment complex. The apartment complex where they live has a limit on the amount of cats that residents are allowed to keep and they had reached their limit.
Of having to give his cats away James said, “We had been taking care of them, treated them, gave them shots and fed them, but will still had to get rid of them — that was the bottom line.”
However, Monday morning James came downstairs to see his wife with the puzzle of expression on her face. He said she had a look of disbelief. That look led him to check outside where he found Biscuit caring for three newborn kittens. He knew it was Biscuit because of the distinctive markings she had. James stated that the man he gave Biscuit to has no idea where he lived so there’s no chance that the man could’ve brought the cat back. Biscuit came all the way back call to have her kittens eight days after being moved to the farm.
According to Dr. Alan Beck, director of the Purdue university school of veterinary medicine, a cat’s sense of smell is similar to our site memory. It’s possible she may have been able to smell the way home after being driven all the way out to a farm.
The couple build a shelter for Biscuit and her kittens so they can stay safe in the backyard against weather and elements. She still back there and is very protective of her kittens. However, the James’s are looking for a new home for the cats.

Leave your own comments by clicking here.Woman Has Dog Cloned Five Times
You may remember the story I wrote a few months ago about the woman, Bernann Mckinney, 57, who had decided to get her pet pit bull, Booger, cloned after his death. Well, she has gotten her wish five times over after paying the South Korean Cloning Company RNL Bio in Seoul $48,000 and agreeing to participate in their publicity campaign.
To remind you of the facts, Booger, was a stray that Bernann saved from the streets. He became her faithful pet and companion and even went on to save her life years later when she was attacked by a Mastiff. Booger saved her by chasing away the Mastiff. The attack was so brutal it left her in a wheel chair and missing three fingers, while the doctors worked to reconstruct her face and repair her right arm. Booger, ever faithful learned to be a service dog and took care of Bernann as she recovered by helping her with laundry, getting drinks from the fridge, opening doors and taking off her shoes. She recovered but Booger later on developed cancer and had to be put down.
This understandably was an enormous loss for Bernann who had RNL Bio use tissue cells from Booger’s ear taken over two years ago, to clone five puppy versions of him.
The five puppies were born last week and sport names like; Booger McKinney, Booger Lee, Booger Ra, Booger Hong and Booger Park after herself, her former dog and the team members that cloned the dog. They all have black coats and identical white spots below their necks.
Cloning is still not an exact science. It can take several attempts before a clone is produced, meaning the previous embryos all die. Plus, clones have a high risk of genetic conditions and health defects.

Hollywood is not the place to go without money, without the glitz and glamour of fame and certainly without the stability of a home for your pets. For years there have been plenty of homeless people sharing the streets of downtown Hollywood with the rich and famous. Many of those homeless also have pets of their own, pets which they love dearly but were unable to properly care for, and pets who local homeless shelters would not allow to enter the buildings. So the homeless chose to stay homeless and without shelter rather than abandoning their beloved friends and pals.
Now there was a new homeless shelter unveiled last Monday that welcomes all the homeless and their pets. Pamela Magette, executive director of pets are wonderful support/Los Angeles stated of the shelter, "Up until now, people on the street with animals have not had a place to go with their animals...They will not avail themselves of emergency shelters if they cannot take their pets."
The shelter features a kennel designed to accommodate the thousands of homeless people in Los Angeles County who are unwilling to leave their pets behind in the search for a place to stay. Currently, the area has and about 88,000 or people living in temporary housing, and about five to 10% of these people have pets according to the national coalition for the homeless.
The shelter is aptly named, PetCo Place, and is mostly funded by PetCo Foundation which is a charitable arm of the pet store. They also receive donations from Home Depot, the City of West Hollywood and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce

Scientists have discovered what may be the world’s smallest species of snake in the Caribbean Island of Barbados. Full grown adults of this species are usually less than 4 inches in length when fully stretched out. This snake is so small it fits neatly on the US Quarter.
This snake was discovered by a man whose teams seem to specialize in discovering world’s smallest species. S. Blair Hedges is the evolutionary biologist at Penn State University who heads the teams that have also discovered the world’s tiniest lizard in the Dominican Republic and the world’s smallest frog in Cuba. He stated that the snake was found underneath a rock near a patch of the Barbadian forest.
The snake’s scientific name is ‘Leptotyphlops carlae’ after Mr. Hedges' wife, Carla Ann Hass. However, it remains to be seen what this little snake’s common name will end up being. The snake will be officially introduced to the scientific world in the journal “Zootaxa” on Monday.
Hedges said of the snake, ‘New and interesting species are still being discovered on Caribbean islands, despite the very small amount of natural forests remaining.’
The snake eats termites and insect larvae, but very little is known of its behaviours or ecology. The snake is a type of thread snake, also called worm snakes which are most often found in the tropics. However, genetic testing has proven that the snake is an entirely new species and it is not poisonous.
Scientists have often noted that islands tend to be home to oversized and miniaturized animals. For example the world’s smallest bird species is the Bee Hummingbird which can be found in Cuba while one of the world’s largest Swallowtail Butterflies can be found in Jamaica. Scientists state that islands are usually host to creatures sized at both ends of the spectrum because they’re inhabited by less diverse ranges of species than on the larger continents.

They banned a certain breed of cat in Australia recently. The Environmental Minister Peter Garrett for Australia has decided to ban the popular hybrid Savannah cat which costs as much as $5,000.00 because it poses a threat to Australia’s native animals.
This poses a problem for breeders who are trying to bring the cats to Australia in a bid to increase business. The first group of fifteen Savannah cats which are descendants of Africa’s Servel Wildcat are due to arrive in Australia this year. They are currently on quarantine in the United States.
This resulting hybrid which is a crossbreed between the circle cat and the domestic feline is popular among some people because it’s more like a dog than a cat in that they’re more sociable with their owners and like to play games.
However, Mr. Garrett and other conservationists have warned that introducing these wild cat hybrids to other countries could threaten the native wildlife such as Koalas in Australia.
Peter Garrett stated of the cats, "On all the evidence I have seen, the risks associated with allowing this cross-bred cat into the country, when we already have up to 12 million feral cats wreaking havoc on native fauna, are simply too great.”
They’re mainly concerned that the hybrid could have more efficient hunting skills than a traditional domestic feline which is already wreaking havoc in the country. However, breeders who have invested money trying to bring the cat to the country are upset and want compensation.
Savannah Australia's Chris Winchester, of Pearcedale said that Mr. Garrett was, "trying to score brownie points because he didn't support the whaling (issue) as much as he should have. He just wants to look good in front of the public.”
