Toilet Train Your Cat the Easy Way in 10 Steps

There is a lengend that one can train a cat to use the toilet.  Many have tried to find the secret to toilet training their feline friends, and many have failed.  I myself have heard the tale of a cat owner who only half trained her cat to use the toilet instead of the litter box.  Yes, it hopped up and used the toilet every time, but every time it went facing the wrong direction…

Avoid this major mishap with your cat by following these convenient 10 steps to toilet training the cat from the Examiner.com:

Step 1: Move the Litter Box
Move your cats litter box from its current location to one side of the toilet (we suggest doing this in a bathroom that will not be frequented by guests).

Step 2: Alert Your Cat
Instead of letting your cat discover on their own that their litter box has been absconded, go find your cat and show them the new location of their litter box so that the next time they use the restroom they won’t panic and leave evidence of their panic on your carpet.

Step 3: Raise it Up
Since the goal is to eventually have your cat using the toilet instead of the litter box conveniently located next to the toilet, you need to raise your cats litter box ever so slightly (we recommend 1-2 inches to begin with) to get them used to using the restroom off the ground. Put an old phone book or a stack of newspapers (you can even buy some pieces of wood to put under the litter box) to elevate the litter box initially.

Step 4: Slow and Steady
As cats don’t appreciate sudden changes, you will be elevating your cats litter box slowly. You can elevate it an inch every day, or you can elevate it a few inches every 2-3 days. Ultimately, you know what your cat can handle and what they can’t. If your cat is easily adaptable, you will likely be able to raise the height of the litter box a little each day. If your cat is resistant to change, respect that and take a slower approach to raising their litter box.

Step 5: Watch them Jump
As you continue to elevate your cat’s litter box off the ground, you will notice that they will have to jump a little higher each increment change to reach it. Eventually, the goal is to have your cat jump on the toilet seat (lid down of course!) to get to their litter box. This will help them become familiar with the seat of the toilet without being afraid of it.

These of course aren’t all the steps to toilet training your cat and please don’t try the job with just these first 5 steps on hand.  To get the rest of the steps head on over to http://www.examiner.com/x-1492-DC-Pet-Care-Examiner~y2008m12d17-How-to-potty-train-your-cat-in-ten-easy-steps
