We all want a little someone to love and to love us back equally.  Sometimes that someone is a child or a friend in the form of a pet.  Should you find that you’re looking for that love in the form of a furry friend from the dog breeder, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

Animal breeding is a business with a wide variance in how the breeders treat their animals.  Some are really bad, but these services don’t all speak for the business as a whole.  If you keep these tips in mind when looking for a pure bred dog to keep you company on the holidays then you’ll be certain to find a furry friend with a reputable breeder.

  • The breeder should have no problem with you seeing all the puppies in their natural environment or interacting with each other.  It’s good to be suspicious if the breeder won’t let you come out to their place of business to see the animal.

  • If you buy from a pet shop, make sure the pet shop is licensed in your state.  The license should ideally be displayed somewhere in the store.

  • Most breeders only handle one or two specific breeds for their business.  So, if you see a lot of different dog breeds running around, it’s possible this breeder is not operating their business legally.

  • Be sure to ask for records that show the veterinarian has examined the puppies within seven days of you finally taking the puppy home.

  • You should also have your own veterinarian examine the puppy within 14 days of taking him home.  If anything is found to be wrong with the dog your veterinarian’s report allows you a full refund from the animal breeder.

The dog breeder business is still a business for many breeders, even though they are handling some of the sweetest examples of love in the world.  As a result many people operate their businesses badly which hurts you and the animals.  Make sure you do your homework to find a reputable breeder before you find that beloved pet.
