Boy Breaks into Zoo, Feeds Animals to Croc

Posted by hope hammond Fri Oct 3, 2008 10:52 AM EST

This past Wednesday a seven year old boy managed to break into the Alice Springs Reptile Centre in Australia and cause a riot of horrors. He thought it would be fun to feed a bunch of Zoo animals to the crocodiles and also clubbed various other animals to death with a stick. On first glance its impossible to see how a young child could have broken into the zoo , let alone killed so many animals. On second glance its shocking that a child would hurt other animals so easily.

The child simply jumped over a security fence in order to get in. He was caught roaming the zoo on several cameras , but was not detected by the security systems. Rex Neindorf , the zoos director believed that the boy may not have been noticed by the security because he was so small.

Neindorf is also shocked at the incident. Hes stated , ‘The fact a seven-year-old can wreak so much havoc in such a short time , and its unbelievable. In my day he'd get a big boot … It was like he was playing a game. We're horrified that anyone can do this , and saddened by the age of the child.

The local , Alice Springs Police identified the boy who lives in the area and had spoken with him and his mother. However , they are unable to press charges. Northern territory law prohibits pressing charges against anyone under the age of ten.

However , the zoo is still considering a lawsuit against the parents for the cost of the animals and damages. Neindorf said , ‘If we can't put the blame on to the child , then someone has to accept the responsibility. We'll be looking at suing the parents , who were supposedly in control of him at the time. I just want people to learn that they can't let their children go and run amok.

The animals that were killed in the incident were; a turtle , four western blue tongue lizards , two bearded dragons , two thorny devils and a much loved 20 year old adult goanna.

The Chief Superintendent of the Scottish SPCA stated , ‘While we can't comment on this specific incident , research clearly demonstrates that children who hurt animals are at an increased risk of being violent towards humans later in life. There is also an increased risk of domestic abuse in a household in which an animal has been deliberately harmed.
