There is a rash of dogs finding their way home after being lost for years this week. One dog, a golden retriever, named Sam I Am vanished two years prior from owner, Alice Baines backyard in Tampa Florida. In fact, she disappeared during the midst of a hurricane and that blew down a fence. The golden retriever disappeared into the hurricane.
Then one Thursday in 2006 in Chicago, Illinois, over 1200 miles from home, Sam I Am was reunited with her owner. A microchip imbedded and Sam I Am’s skin revealed his family’s address. They are amazed that the Golden Retriever managed to make it all the way to Illinois’ from Florida.
And more recently Rocco the beagle found his way home after an amazing five years. Rocco, disappeared from his home in 2003 in Queens and resurfaced earlier this month at a shelter in Georgia, 850 miles away in Hinesville.
His owner, Natalie is now eleven years old and more than excited to have her pet back home. "When my mom told me they found Rocco, I cried hysterically - just like I did when they told me he was lost...I felt like I was in a dream, like my head was spinning."
Roscoe was discovered when someone dropped him off as a stray at the liberty county animal health control on July 5. After a routine scan they found he had an identity chip implanted in his skin which revealed his owner’s name and address.
Natalie also said, “I don't think he recognized me, but I told him I loved him as much as always…Rocco seemed a little confused, but happy. He looked at me like, 'I don't know who you are, but I love you, too.' “
Roscoe is currently settling in back home and try to get used to Bonita, the Poodle mix the family picked up in 2004.
