It’s definitely getting hot out there, and we mean temperature wise! Your pets aren’t going to love the heat as much as you think if it gets any warmer so take the time to make sure they are safe.
As usual, the Austin Humane Society has come up with some ways fro you to protect your pets from any extreme rise in temperatures.
Lisa Starr, Humane Society employee states, ‘The heat is very dangerous. It can actually be fatal to your animal…Here at the Austin Humane Society; we're always going to recommend that you keep your pets inside.’
Should you take your pet outside for any extended period of time please keep an eye out for signs of heat exhaustion. They include:
Starr continues to say, ‘If your pet exhibits any of those symptoms, you need to get them to a veterinarian immediately… Animals always need fresh clean water all the time…If your pet is outside, make sure they are in an area that has a lot of cover, so it can escape the direct heat and sunlight. Also, big baby pools filled with water are good if your pet's outside. And, make sure your pet has lots and lots of ventilation.’
It’s definitely true that your pets need plenty of fresh air and ventilation, especially when you leave them in the car. Even if it’s only for a few minutes you must open your car windows so the pets can get some fresh air. Typically, the temperature in your car is going to be 40 degrees warmer than the air temperature outside. Your car is going to turn into an oven almost as soon as you turn off the air conditioning.
Pets need cooling too!
