Ways to Keep Track of Your Pet at the Airport

How I felt while I posting this blog entry: suspicious

Many people are travelling with their pets these days, especially when taking air flights.  However, flying can be extremely traumatic for a pet.  Airlines are getting better about taking good care of your pets before, during and after flight, but it’s still a risky venture.

That’s why you should always stay close to your pet at the airport.  Double and triple check that the correct flight information and your own contact information is on your pet’s carrier and on your pet.  In these days of pet implants, it might be a good idea to get your dog microchipped before you take him or her to the airport.

You never know what can happen between giving Fido up to the baggage handlers and picking him up at the luggage carousel.  To help reduce the risk of losing your pet keep these tips from Fox News in mind when travelling with Fido:

    • Make sure your pet’s microchip is registered with the manufacturer’s database for tracking.
    • Your pet should be wearing an ID tag with his or her name and your cell number.
    • Carry a recent photo of Fido with you should he disappear.
    • Once on board ask the flight attendant if the cargo area is pressurized because you are concerned for the safety of your pet.  Depending on where the pet is, they may even be able to check on your pet periodically.
    • Pets can be flown as checked baggage or cargo.  If you fly your pet as cargo they’ll be put for a ride on the luggage carousel for you to pick up, which may make for a rough ride for the pet.
    • Pets flown as checked baggage must be in ventilated International Air Transport Association (IATA) compliant carriers.

We hope that you’ll keep these tips in mind as you travel with your pets over the course of the summer.
